La datation des portes du Puy est incertaine. Pour les épigraphistes l'écriture indiquerait le milieu du XIIe siècle (cf. bibl.). L'artiste Gauzfredus est inconnu par ailleurs et on a rapproché le nom Petrus d'évêques du milieu ou de la fin du siècle, mais il n'est nullement prouvé que ce soit le nom d'un évêque (on a notamment lu à tort EPI(scopus) au lieu d'EDI(ficavit).
La légende de chaque panneau adapte une citation biblique en hexamètre.
L'épigraphie de la porte est aussi remarquable par l'encadrement en écriture arabe coufique dont le texte, discuté, pourrait se traduire « Souveraineté à Allah ».
